04 September 2010 - Racers 24 Hour Football Charity Match Report
- Martin Hall
On the 4th and 5th of September this year, Silverstone Racers FC organised a 24 hour charity football match in aid of Sports Relief. The aim was to not only raise money but also to have some fun and get adults and children of all ages involved. The match started at 12pm on Saturday morning and finished on Sunday at 12pm.
There was great support for the event across the club, from coaches, children and parents, with a variety of standards and competitiveness (I hear the 10-12am slot was a highly skilled affair!). We were very grateful to the Gateway School in Tiffield who not only provided us their astro turf pitch but also entered a team for the 6am slot on Sunday morning (very professionally dressed!). Support also came from across the village and from some of those who wouldn’t normally be associated with football.
We raised a fantastic £810 and with the gift aid funding this will probably take us to near the £1000 mark, so well done to all who contributed. Thank you also to the local shop and pub for allowing us to fundraise on their premise.
It is difficult to single out people for support when there are so many who have contributed, but I feel compelled to thank a few individuals without whom this wouldn’t have happened. Firstly thanks to Paul Harris and Linda Moran, who gave me moral and organisational support. Caroline Robertson who got the girls and ladies to help with some last minute slots. Caroline Harper from Tiffield who organised the pitch and a fantastic fundraising effort of £100+. And finally, for those who paid with their bodies, Martin and Lindsey who both had some surgery, don’t worry Martin, your archillies will be sorted for next years event (just don’t mention it to the wife....).
28 July 2010 - Silverstone School Watamu, Kenya
Silverstone School Watamau, Kenya came into being in early 2004 after a group of friends went to Kenya for a holiday in 2002. They were so touched by what they saw that they wanted to help the children get a good standard of education, and so they started by sponsoring three children with their education.
The school started with one classroom with 11 children and today now has over 300 children attending the school. The childrens' ages range from 2-14 years. Through generous sponsorship and donations the school now has 10 classrooms, a kitchen, toilet blocks, washing and drinking facilities, and an office for the headmaster & teachers. The children and school feel very close to the Silverstone School in England and were delighted last year when the football club donated their old kit to them. As you can see, we have a team that is ready to play and proud to be associated to Silverstone Racers FC.
